This week, we worked on our first cinemagraphs with actual cameras. In order for my idea to work, I had to film two different videos with different shutter speeds and exposures since some of the video would be done outside. Asli, Mr. Gonda and I experimented with the different settings on Wednesday and we discovered that we couldn't get the desired "ghost-like" effect on the camera we were using. Mr. Gonda and I met the next morning during our free period and used his fancy camera to film both of the videos. We picked a good time of day to film it because more people were outside then. Today Mr. Gonda taught me how to composite the videos and blend them properly in order to make it more realistic. We had a few issues with the video size and the quality of the film, but we figured it out and I think it conveys my idea well enough.
Last class, everyone presented their projects and we gave each other feedback on how we can improve our cinemagraphs. I was second to last and was super nervous, so I stumbled over a lot of what I said. I eventually got my point across and everyone seemed to think that it worked. The only problems were the reflection in the window and the poor quality of the export. The only way I can think of to fix the reflection problem is filming it at another time of day. I'm not sure what to do about the quality of the cinemagraph. When Mr. Gonda tried to help me, he seemed just as confused as I was. I will keep brainstorming for more improvements.
This week has been mostly planning. Today, the teachers and I talked about our filming schedule for next week. We decided to do a polo, chapel and spirit uniform pattern to represent Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On Monday, we are going to film my part in the cinemagraph during class. On Tuesday, Mr. Gonda and I are going to film in between first and second period for the first part of the background. On Wednesday, we will film as people walk to chapel for the second part of the background. On Friday, we will film as everyone leaves for the school day, which will be the final part of the background. Its going to be a very busy week.
