In our class we were assigned to find a way to make dorm rooms more efficient. Dorm rooms are very crowded with little space to do your homework and study for tests. We decided to reinvent the typical dorm room desk. We decided that in order to create the most space, we should make a portable desk. Many college students enjoy studying outside, so having a portable desk that they can take anywhere is ideal. We also planned on having storage inside the desk for materials such as laptops, pencils, paper, etc. Our main precedent for this project was a murphy desk. The murphy desk is placed permanently on to the wall and then folds out to a desk. We wanted our desk to do this but throughout the year we decided we didn't like this idea. First, we made a desk out of cardboard and hot glue with fragile wooden sticks that were used to keep the legs steady on our project. Our first set of legs were made out of wood with hot glue on the end to make the legs not slide on the ground. These legs were very unstable, partly because there were three legs placed badly with no sturdy materials. While the majority of our project was relatively easy to create, the type of legs we needed continued to give us problems during the course. We thought about using tripod legs but they were too bulky and wouldn't be comfortable on anyones' back. We ended up with strong wooden legs that folded and had magnets that stuck to the bottom of our desk.

For our NUVU project we made a Multi Functional Bed. The bed is a combination of a desk and a bed to help concerve space in the dorm room. Our original idea was a flip up desk at the foot of the bed,unfortunatly this ideas was bad so we moved on. We came up with the idea for a desk that could slid up and down the bed to any place you wanted for easy use, as well as becoming a normal desk when pushed all the way to the foot of the bed.

As a group of juniors and seniors, we were instantly inspired by our studio, Welcome Home, which focused on improving college dorm room conditions. We concluded that one of the biggest problems in dorm rooms was the lack of extra space. After coming up with lots of different ideas, ranging from a murphy bed to a horizontal closet, and trying them out, we decided that a Murphy Mirror would best help to solve the problem at hand.

The Murphy Mirror is a full-length mirror that flips upward into a desk. It provides an additional space in the room to get ready in the mornings. A student can easily pull up a chair to use the Murphy Mirror as a vanity. It has extra storage space in the bottom for makeup and accessories. The Murphy Mirror is also made by 2x4 wood so that it can be installed and made flush with the wall.

The Murphy Mirror is the perfect addition to a college dorm room. It provides a student with a full-length mirror as well as a desk with extra storage. The best part about the Murphy Mirror is that it can be made flush with the dorm room wall, and takes up very little space.

College Dorm rooms are often very crowded, small, and have little to no space. Sometimes people don’t even have space to walk around in the dorm rooms. We decided to create an everyday object that can be used in multiple ways and have storage space to make it easier to move and have space in the rooms. We first had the idea to create a bed similar to a Murphy bed with a better access to the closet area and create Rods for the clothes.

We soon realized that we did not know how to the machines of it. So we focused our attention on other types everyday bedroom objects that can create more space for the dorms. We found a wall mounted fold out desk and became inspired by that idea. With that inspiration we decided to create a full length mirror that can pull out into a vanity and have storage space inside. There is storage space from the bottom to the top of the mirror inside, the middle part of the mirror can fold up to create a vanity, and the sides of the top and bottom part of the mirror have magnets and hinges to open them up. This Mirror would create more space in girls dorms because now they have a 3- in- 1 object were they can store all of their make-up, hair products and hygiene products.
