In this studio, students will explore the forces and motions involved in athletic activity. The throwing of a football, the stroke of a swimmer, the flip of a gymnast, the kick of a martial artist - these activities can all be understood through the lenses of geometry and physics. With this understanding, students will create athletic machines that will perform at or beyond the level of human athletes. Projects will begin with prototypes exploring geometries of the human musculoskeletal system and the forces exerted at the peak of athletic performance. These forces will then be mechanically matched through the design of linkages, levers, and pneumatic systems.
