All humans face individual challenges that may or may not be understood by their community. In this studio we will consider prosthetics as body extensions and explore how mechanical additions to our bodies can effect our functional and expressive identities. In particular, we will examine the practical and expressive qualities of assistive devices that expand our understanding of prosthesis.
In collaboration with students at Karam House in Reyhanli, Turkey, students will choose a user to work with (in Reyhanli) to design and build a kinetic prosthesis to enhance ability and/or communication in the world. Students at All Saints will be in regular contact with students at Karam House, and projects will be worked on together by students in both schools. A local prosthetics manufacturer in Reyhanli will work with students to develop their ideas.
